NOK: Rightsizing Networks Unit; No Microsoft Deal Planned

The Mobile World Congress is going on in Barcelona, Spain this week, the biggest telecom show of the year, and it’s fitting, therefore, that the press is filled with talk of changes at Nokia (NOK), still the largest handset supplier in the world, and the owner of Nokia-Siemens Networks, a major supplier to the telcos.

This morning kicked off with a report by Bloomberg’s Marie Mawad that Nokia and partner Siemens AG (SI) are discussing sales of “non-core assets” after having already shed divisions of the equipment maker, citing remarks by NSN chief executive Rajeev Suri.

And The New York Times’s Kevin O’Brien writes that Nokia is not considering an “equity partnership” or a “formal merger” Microsoft (MSFT), its handset partner and financial angel, citing remarks by CEO Stephen Elop during an interview at the show.

Nokia shares today are down 33 cents, or almost 6%, at $5.46.
