Honda says its vehicles are more durable than those from any other non-luxury nameplate out there. Three out of four Hondas from the past 25 years are still are on the road.
The claim is based on data from stats keepers Polk, which looked at auto registrations by brand from 1988 to 2012. It does not include Honda's Acura brand, which is part of the 11% of cars over the period that fall into the luxury category.
Honda couldn't be more tickled at the finding that its cars hang together.
"One of the most important considerations for a new vehicle purchase is how long that vehicle will last and this study demonstrates that Honda quality and reliability is not just part of our hard-earned reputation but represents our industry-leading performance on the road," said Michael Accavitti, a senior vice president of American Honda, in a statement.
Just how good is having 75% of your cars on the road after 25 years?
We talked to one of the best numbers analysts in the business, Tom Libby at Polk, but he says he can't say. He couldn't provide an average, referring us back to Honda, which had referred us to Polk.
As good as the 75% figure may be, it's hard to know where all other brands stand. Dodge may be breathing down Honda's tailpipe, for all we know. Libby, however, confirms Honda's claim.
Thus, for sheer bragging rights, Honda now has another.
