Google’s Schmidt Sees Platform Victory over Apple Akin to ’80s PC Battle

In case you missed it, Bloomberg‘s Brian Womack this morning had a write-up of an interview yesterday with Google‘s (GOOG) executive chairman Eric Schmidt, who emphasized in the discussion what he sees as Google’s Android software for phones and tablets widening its lead over Apple‘s (AAPL) iOS software for the iPhone and iPad.

This is a huge platform change,” Schmidt told Womack. “This is of the scale of 20 years ago — Microsoft (MSFT) versus Apple, he said. Were winning that war pretty clearly now.

Schmidt referenced data from a Gartner press release from November 14th that showed that Android-based smartphone sales globally saw a share increase in the third quarter to 72.4% of all smartphones by platform, from 52.5% a year earlier, while iOS saw a decline from 15% to 13.9%. Schmidt also cited the statistic of 1.3 million Android-based devices being activated each day.

Google shares today are up $5.21, or 0.8%, at $702.09; Apple shares are up 61 cents at $542.
