PCs: Q3 Sales Up A Disappointing 3%, Says Gartner; Lenovo No. 2

Gartner this afternoon reports that global PC shipments rose 3.2%, year over year, in the three months ending in September, to 91.8 million units, lower than the firm’s projection of 5.1% growth.

Similarly, IDC reported Q3 growth of 3.6%, below its 4.5%, projection.

Europe, the Middle East, and Africa were a weak spot, the firm said, especially Western Europe. Analyst Mikako Kitagawa remarked that the growth was less than normal for the industry for the time of year, with back-to-school sales disappointing, likely hurt by “the popularity of non-PC devices, including media tablets, such as the iPad and smartphones.”

For the first time, Lenovo (0992HK) reached the number two spot in slaes, with 13.5% market share, up from 11.1%, a year earlier, behind Hewelett-Packard (HPQ) at 17.7%. Lenovo’s shipments rose 25% in contrast to just 5% at HP. Lenovo surpassed Dell’s (DELL), which sank to 11.6% share from 12.2% a year earlier as its unit shipments declined 1.4%.

IDC’s Loren Loverde remarked that Lenovo’s success in the quarter — IDC also had the company at number two, with 13.7% share — showed that “opportunities” remain in the PC market. He said tablets aren’t displacing PCs, but it and other gadgets are distracting consumers, who are delaying PC purchases.

I would assume many will be picking over HP’s shipment growth to ascertain whether the August announcement the company might dump PCs had any effect. Based on these numbers, it would appear that HP was able to hold up quite well despite that announcement.

In the U.S., total PC shipments rose just 1.1%, year over year. Apple’s (AAPL) shipments rose 21.5%, giving the company 12.9%. HP sales rose 15%, while Dell’s (DELL) fell 7.2%.
