Toyota Sees Big Rebound in 2012; GM Becoming Sales Leader?

Toyota (TM) looks like it will no longer be the world’s top-selling auto company, according to sales projections the company made today. The myriad pressures the company faced this year, from natural disasters to a very strong Yen, damaged its supply chain and made it more difficult to sell cars overseas.

Toyota said it expects to sell 7.9 million vehicles in 2011, a 6% year over year drop. At its current pace, General Motors (GM) could sell more than 9 million vehicles this year, the Wall Street Journal estimated. GM has already seen sales rise 9.2% for the first nine months of the year. Volkswagen also could sell more than 8 million vehicles.

But Toyota sees its outlook brightening in 2012, and forecast that sales will rise 20% to 8.48 million.
