Taiwan Semiconductor (TSM) today said it will invest $50 million to take a 21% stake in Stion, a San Jose-based startup working on high efficiency, thin-film solar photovoltaic modules. The investment will be made through a Taiwan Semi affiliate called VentureTech Alliance.
At the same time, Stion will license and transfer its thin-film CIGSS – copper indium gallium sulfur-selenide – technology to TSMC, which in turn will provide solar modules back to Stion.
Other investors in Stion include Khosla Ventures, Lightspeed Venture Partners, Braemar Energy Ventures and General Catalyst Partners.
